The National Sleep Foundation maintains that seven to nine hours of sleep for adult humans is optimal, maintaining that sufficient sleep brings improved alertness, memory and problem solving as well as a reduced risk of accidents and better health.

A study in 2003 found that cognitive performance declines with fewer than eight hours of sleep. Sleeping in after loss of sleep does not help you catch up so it is important you get a good night's sleep every night.
